Bitter tree Shiuri cherry

苦い木 シウリザクラ

The Tsugumori site is home to a variety of trees, flowers, and creatures.

This time we will introduce the "Shiurizakura".

The other day, the Tsugumori members were told by head gardener Kazui that this tree is a Shiurizakura.

Because the fruit, leaves, and bark have a bitter taste, the tree was called "Siuni" in the Ainu language, which means "bitter tree," and this name was later changed to Shiurizakura. I immediately put it in my mouth and confirmed the bitterness.

Unlike the typical Somei-Yoshino cherry tree, the Shiuri cherry tree blooms in almost pure white flowers. I missed my chance to photograph it this spring, but next year I'd like to take some good photos and post them here.

The Shiuri cherry tree is located behind the owl bench, providing a nice shade for the owl.

Please be sure to check it out when you visit.
